The Slammer - Episode
4
First broadcast: Friday 13 October 2006, BBC ONE/CBBC
Channel, 4:55pm
Ted, the Governor, is having his daily meeting with the prison
wardens. He tells them which lucky inmates he has chosen to perform
in the Freedom Show. Les Bubb, a mime act with a difference, Professor
Bumm's Story Machine, D-wing's greatest juggler Kris Kremo and the
Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain.
However, it's not all good news. It has been brought to the Governor's
attention that escape attempts are on the up. Quite literally! Earlier
that day he discovered four prisoners trying to get over the prison
wall in a hot air balloon. Fortunately he managed to bring them
down with his catapult. But the important thing is that they could
have got away, and the Governor will not have that in his prison!
He wants the wardens to be extra vigilant. Mr Burgess couldn't agree
more, and finds that the prison sometimes looks like a holiday camp.
That's why the Governor has decided to issue all prison wardens
with a new piece of equipment. This piece of equipment, if worn
correctly, will make it 99.9% impossible for prisoners to escape.
The platform boot!
Melvin's not happy, it's his gran's birthday, and every year he
picks her up from the nursing home and takes her out for tea and
cake. She'll be heartbroken if Melvin doesn't show up, she'll think
he forgot about her. Peter Nokio asks why Melvin doesn't invite
his gran round to the prison, but Melvin's tells him she doesn't
know he's in the Slammer. There's only one thing for it, he's going
to have to escape.

Meanwile, Mr Burgess and the Governor's nephew Jeremy are having
problems with their new platform boots. "If I had my way, I'd
do things a lot differently!" Mr Burgess tells Jeremy, who
quite likes the boots. They make him feel quite special. "With
these boots on, nothing's going to get past me!" Jeremy says
whilst a giant panda attacks another warden.
Little Titch is wondering how Melvin's planning to escape. Melvin's
been locked up for years, and Peter Nokio asks him what he usually
does to visit his granny. Usually, it's not a problem: "I wait
for the show to start, that way the Governor and the audience are
all distracted watching the show. Then I nip out into the excercise
yard, hop over the wall, pick up granny from the nursing home, take
her for a quick cake and cuppa, drop her back off at the nursing
home, hop back over the wall, nip back through the excercise yard
and I'm back in my cell before you can say Hot Shoe Shuffle! Piece
of cake!" This time it's different however, the prison warden's
new platform boots make it 99.9% impossible for Melvin to escape.
Peter Nokio's got a plan!

In the meantime, Mr Gimbert and Jeremy find a magic act rehearsing
in the corridor. The magician hasn't got permission and will be
severely punished by Mr Burgess, but he can finish his act first.
The magician disappears in his box, and out of the prison. Mr Burgess
and Gimbert have been had, a prisoner escaped in front of their
eyes!

Peter and Titch tell Melvin about their plan. A while ago, Peter
was beginning to get worried and started to think he'd never get
a spot on the Freedom Show, so he dug a tunnel underneath his bed.
A passport to freedom, to be used only in an absolute emergency.
Melvin's shocked. Peter also reveals he used to be a master sculptor,
and tells Melvin he's gonna make a life-size model of him. Melvin
enters the tunnel.
The Governor's getting ready for the Freedom Show, when Mr Burgess
and Jeremy drop into his office. More prisoners have escaped. "But
that's impossible, what about the boots?" the Governor asks.
The boots are the problem! The Governor holds his hands up, the
boots are not all what they're cranked up to be. "But I'll
tell you one thing they are good for, dancing!" The Governor's
dancing around and falls through the floor, right into Peter's escape
tunnel! Melvin is discovered.

It's time for the Freedom Show, in which the audience decides who
gets to leave The Slammer with the help of the Clap-O-Meter. Whoever
gets the loudest applause wins a price money can't buy, freedom.
The children were amazed by The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain,
but decided master juggler Kris Kremo should leave The Slammer.
